The Challenge of the Jesus Prayer

Anyone who has been praying the Jesus Prayer for two minutes will tell you that almost immediately there is the challenge of trying to hold it together, in the sense of meaning it, focusing on it and trying to cope with distractions from it. Here is Frederica Mathewes-Green commenting on this in her excellent book on the subject:

"The hard part is to pull together all your attentions, though it kicks like a toddler, and focus it on the Lord, and then humbly ask for his mercy. Learning to actually mean the Jesus Prayer, from ever-deepening regions of your heart, is what makes the practice so challenging."
