Advice for saying the Jesus Prayer

The following advice is quoted from "The Way of the Pilgrim" where an elder shares with the main character some teachings from the Philokalia by Simon the New Theologian:

"Sit alone and in silence; bow your head and close your eyes; relax your breathing and with your imagination look into your heart; direct your thoughts from your head into your heart. An while inhaling say, "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me," either softly with your lips on in your mind. Endeavour to fight distractions but be patient and peaceful and repeat this process frequently."
